What's different about here.

If you're in the village of Hudson Falls on town sewer, you don't need us. But most of Kingsbury — the homes along Route 4, Dix Avenue, County Route 36 and everything in between — is on private systems, and a lot of them were put in decades ago for smaller houses than the ones sitting on them now.

Kingsbury is one of the areas Washington County lists as eligible for the State Septic System Replacement Fund, which can return up to half the cost of an eligible replacement (capped at $10,000). It's worth asking about before you assume a replacement is out of reach. Permits run through the county Department of Code Enforcement in Fort Edward: stamped plan, $100 application, two to four weeks of review.

Hudson Falls questions

Asked by Hudson Falls homeowners.

The house was two bedrooms when the system went in and it's four now. Is that a problem?+

It can be. The state sizes tanks and fields by bedroom count — 1,000 gallons through three bedrooms, 1,250 at four — and a field built for two bedrooms will eventually show it. If the system's tired, the replacement gets sized to the house you actually have.

How do I know if I'm on sewer or septic?+

A sewer bill from the village is the giveaway. If you've never had one and there's a tank lid somewhere in the yard, you're on septic. Not sure? We'll find the tank on the site visit.

How quickly can you get to Hudson Falls?+

It's close. Site visits are free and usually the same week.
