What's different about here.

Granville is quarry country, and the slate that built the town also sits close to the surface on a lot of lots. That matters for septic: when the deep test hole hits ledge or seasonal groundwater too soon, a conventional trench field won't work and the designer moves to a raised or fill system. It's more stone and more machine time, and it's exactly why we dig the test pits before anyone talks about a price.

Permits run through Washington County Code Enforcement in Fort Edward with a plan sealed by a licensed design professional. Neighboring Hartford is on the county's eligibility list for the State Septic System Replacement Fund; Granville isn't on the current map, but the list can change and we'll check it against your address when you call.

Local notes

Three things to know before you get a quote.

Ledge & groundwater

Shallow slate is common. The test pits tell the designer whether a conventional field works or the system needs to be raised. We dig them on the first visit.

County permit

Washington County Code Enforcement: stamped design, $100 application, one deep test hole and two perc holes minimum, two to four weeks of review.

Fund eligibility

Hartford, next door, is on Washington County's replacement-fund list (up to 50% back, up to $10,000). We'll check Granville addresses against the county's current map.

Granville questions

Asked by Granville homeowners.

What is a raised septic system and why would I need one?+

When there isn't enough usable soil between the surface and ledge or groundwater, the absorption area is built up in imported fill above grade so effluent gets the depth of soil it needs to treat properly. It's a normal design in slate country, and we build a lot of them.

Our farmhouse system has no records. Where do you start?+

We find the tank and the outlet, trace the line, and dig test pits in the area a new field would go. From there the designer draws a system sized to the house as it stands today, and the county permits it like any other replacement.

Do you work across the Vermont line?+

Our septic work is New York, where we know the county process cold. For Poultney and Fair Haven we handle general excavation; ask us and we'll tell you straight what we can take on.
